Three keys to becoming a female hockey rock star

Female Hockey RockstarFor the last 3 weeks, the members of the new Total Female Hockey Training Team have been working hard to take their game to the next level (that’s NOT them in the picture). There is no doubt in my mind that these girls hockey players have what it takes to become female hockey rock stars. Do you?

There are 3 keys to becoming a female hockey rock star this off-season. Anyone can do them, but most players choose not to. What choices will you make this summer that will move you closer to your ultimate hockey dreams?

1) Be willing to do the work.

If you want to be a great female hockey player, you cannot overlook this. There is absolutely no use in having big dreams and setting the goals that will get you there unless you are willing to do the work needed to make your dreams a reality. The girls hockey players who have been part of the Total Female Hockey Training Team all through May have really impressed me with their willingness and ability to do the work that is necessary to take their game to the next level. No one is making them come in and train with me three days a week this summer. Their coach isn’t forcing them to be there and their . They have made the choice to become excellent this summer. And if you want to be excellent, you need to take the small steps each and every day that will move you closer to your ultimate hockey dream as well.

The most important thing that you can do this summer to become the best female hockey player possible is to train off the ice. Get faster, get stronger and get fitter off the ice and you will be a faster skater, have a harder shot and overtime dominating conditioning on the ice. The members of the Total Female Hockey Training Team are working hard each and every day to be their best….are you?

2) Believe anything is possible.

Dream BIG. Take a second and think about all the things you want to achieve on and off the ice – and then dream BIGGER. When I first told my current Total Female Hockey Training Team that they were going to be able to do chin-ups after using our girls hockey only training program this summer, most of them looked at me like I’m crazy. When I told them that they would be able to bang out 20 perfect push-ups, I got looks of disbelief yet again.

To be great, you have to believe in yourself first.
And if you can’t quite wrap your head around the fact that you can achieve amazing things off the ice this off-season that are going to make you unstoppable in September, I am going to ask you to suspend disbelief. You may not believe that you will be a push-up machine quite yet, but you need to start entertaining the possibility that it will happen because of the hard work and dedication that you are putting towards your off-ice training this summer.

3) Take the road less traveled.

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time: If you do what everyone else does, you are going to end up like everyone else. Do you want to be a middle of the road player? Do you want to settle for less? Are you going to hold yourself to a lower standard because that’s what your teammates are doing? Are you willing to take the road less traveled in order to achieve your dreams in the world of women’s hockey. Because if you truly want to be great, you have to be willing to do more than what everyone else is willing to do. You have to be willing to get outside of your comfort zone and push the envelope.

Always remember…

When you aren’t comfortable, that’s your chance to get better.

If you are worried about failing or being judged because you are willing to do more and hold yourself to a higher standard…

If you think that you don’t deserve the chance to be the best player possible…

If you want to be the exact same player next season as you were last season…

Then make the easy choice.

Don’t do anything.

That’s what most girls hockey players are doing this summer. Nothing. They aren’t doing off-ice training, they aren’t holding themselves to a higher standard, they aren’t making the little choices every day that are going to allow them to be great.

If you want to be like everyone else, do what everyone else does.

If you want to be the next great female hockey player…

1) Outwork everyone.

2) Believe in yourself.

3) Take the road less traveled.

The newest members of the Total Female Hockey Training Team (Devon, Lindsey, Jennifer, Coco, Nadia, Darby, Joey and Kaitlyn) are doing all the things they need to do off the ice to take their on-ice game to the next level…

What are you going to do today that will move you one step closer to your ultimate hockey dream?

Work Hard. Dream BIG.
