A little over a month ago, Preston and I went to the Big Island of Hawaii to watch the Ironman World Championships. Through some luck and good connections, we were VIPs for the day and got to ride in a spotter van for the women pro athletes. I felt really cool at the time sporting my Ironman VIP badge (thank you RT) but feel even cooler now sporting my new limited edition K-Swiss K-ONAs.
As luck would have it, in the spotter van was the VP of Marketing for K-Swiss, out there to support her sponsored athletes (Go Lieto Bros and Leanda!). After 6 hours of fun in the car, we swapped business cards. K-Swiss had just completed a re-branding and launched their new triathlon and run specific shoe line at the race with a splashy new shoe worn by their athletes. Upon returning home and pining for the warmth of Kona and those really cool shoes we saw, I emailed my new friend asking if they were still available for purchase and at what price. To my delight she asked for our sizes and said she could have some sent our way. A couple weeks went by and I thought, perhaps it had slipped her radar, and I let my dream of really cool shoes fade away. Until a week ago when I got an email from their PR agency letting me know that our new shoes had made their way back to the mainland!
Low and behold the shoes arrived this week and they are just too cute for words! I know, typically I go ga-ga for some sexy heels with toe cleavage but these are almost as fun. Their claim to fame is that they are super light weight, only 9 ounces, which puts my trusty little Asics to shame (nearly 11 oz.). They also have some interesting features for ventilation, keeping your feet cool and dry, which is always good when dousing one’s self with water at aid stations.
I’m in the final stretch of training for the Cal International Marathon and a have a good month of shoe life in my new Asics, so now is not the time to be throwing a new pair of shoes into the mix. I couldn’t resist testing them out, however, and threw them on for a run last night. I only did 40 minutes on the treadmill but so far I like the shoes a lot. I noticed the lighter weight and the shoes felt springy and cushy, despite their lean build. Although, most new shoes tend to feel this way, hence my obsession with brand new, clean running shoes. I won’t be running any long runs in these puppies for a while, plus they are limited edition, so I kind of have to preserve them. Perhaps I will pony up in a few months and buy the new version of the shoe, which is also very pretty. For now, I will happily put my feet in the shoes to walk around my office, annoying my coworkers with my “really fancy new shoes” or strut around in them in my apartment.
