Ana Ivanovic upset by Lucie Safarova at Toray Pan Pacific
Lucie Safarova upset Ana Ivanovic 6-4 7-6 in the first round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
Ivanovic double-faulted 11 times and connected on just 41 percent of her first serves against the unseeded Safarova.
“I know how Ana is feeling and I feel it with her,” Safarova said. “She’s struggling with her serve and when that goes, all your game goes.”
Safarova’s win was arguably the highlight of a low-key opening day at the lucrative Pan Pacific Open, featuring nine of the world’s top 10 women.
Safarova had lost two of her previous three meetings with Ivanovic, one of them at last year’s French Open when the Serb went on to win the title before reaching number one in 2008.
“When I saw the draw I thought I could beat her,” said Safarova. “But you never know what she’s going to bring.”
In other first-round matches, Alisa Kleybanova defeated Ayumi Morita 6-1, 6-4 and Gisela Dulko beat Agnes Szavay 6-3, 6-0.
Sabine Lisicki made it past Patty Schnyder 6-4, 6-0, and Elena Vesnina ousted Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-3, 6-2.
Flavia Pennetta was also upset after losing to Roberta Vinci 6-1 6-2.
