Baylor tops the Associated Press preseason women’s basketball poll for the first time in program history. The Lady Bears, led by junior center Britteny Griner, started last year at No. 2 eventually taking the top spot for seven weeks.
“This is great recognition for our program and Baylor University,” coach Kim Mulkey said in a statement. “Regardless of where you’re ranked at the beginning of the season it’s a positive for your university. We’ll embrace it but also keep in mind that it doesn’t win basketball games.”
The rest of the poll (first-place votes in parentheses):
1. Baylor (33)
