When we exercise, we tend to focus on the calories we’re burning. It probably doesn’t cross our minds that we’re burning through the earth’s resources as well. Green Girl is back this week with two simple tips on how to protect the environment when we work out.
Take It Outside
According to iVillage.com, “Running for 30 minutes on a treadmill will use .75 kilowatt hours which is the same amount of electricity you’d use to light up a Christmas tree for 6 hours.” Instead, go for a run outside. It’s nature’s treadmill.
Walk This Way
“The average car emits about six tons of carbon dioxide every year. If you live two miles or less from your gym, try biking, running or walking there. Not only will you save gas and cut down on your carbon footprint, you’ll add some extra burn to your workout. An average 140 pound woman who walks two miles each way to the gym and back would burn about 250 calories a day, which adds up to 18 pounds a year,” says iVillage.
