North Carolina’s hopes of a third consecutive national title ended on Saturday afternoon as the Tar Heels imploded on home turf against against Notre Dame, crashing to a 4-1 defeat. The loss was UNC’s first by multiple goals since the 1985 NCAA Final against George Mason (0-2) and the worst in program history as an NCAA team.
The afternoon started out in nightmarish fashion when Heels keeper Hannah Daly dropped a long free kick, allowing Rose Augustin to finish simply and resulting in Daly being lifted for Anna Sieloff soon after. Crystal Dunn would pull one back in the nineteenth minute, but it was all downhill from there. Augustin would set up the Irish’s second and third before Ellen Jantsch would add the final humiliating blow late on. The Irish would score on four of their five shots on goal.
Notre Dame travels to Stillwater to play Oklahoma State for a spot in the College Cup next weekend. Date/Time TBA. Full recap to come later.Powered by Sidelines
