I’m rockin’ out here in Daytona Beach this week, getting ready for my second event of the year! In case you missed it we were in Winter Haven last week for the Florida Natural Classic, and it was a good start for me.
First off, I spent my wintertime in California because of the chilly weather in Ohio (although the ball does roll further on the ice, ha ha!). So I drove all the way from Cali to Ohio, then down to Florida. Oh yeah, that’s 3,117 miles! So I was more than a little stiff when I showed up for my first event.
I literally spent three days trying to find my game, I was hitting everything to the right! Golf is so frustrating sometimes! But instead of going straight to changing my swing all around, I just decided to keep hitting different shots on the range for hours and hours. I would hit fades, then draws, low and then high. My timing was slowly but surely coming together, pheww! Help me golf gods!
Since we haven’t worked together in months, my dad and I fought for a few days over who was the “boss” this week. We both have strong heads and we couldn’t quite get our groove working together. I spent the winter working by myself and had a set plan already, but he has been caddying me like a champ since I was young. It’s tough sometimes.
Then it hit me…Everyone chokes in different ways. My way of choking has always been trying to do too much with nobody’s help. It’s the first week…and I’m already choking!? No, no this cannot happen! So I met my dad at the gym and apologized and we decided to go get ’em this week, “coffing style”. His job is course management and mine is executing shots. Let’s do this!
My game finally felt solid by the Friday morning, and I was ready! However, it sure wasn’t easy; the winds came HOWLING through Winter Haven! My dad did an excellent job picking clubs (Watch out Steve, Tiger may want him next) and I was hitting the draws and fades I practiced all week long! It was so exciting to hit the ball with such creativity!!
The second day…I came out of the gates roaring towards the finish line and made four birdies on the front nine. Watch out leader board! But thennnn….two bad tee shots and two double bogeys later I ended up finishing around par. Ughhh, so close! The good news is I now KNOW I have what it takes to win out here, it’s a great feeling!
After a so-so round in 30mph wind on Sunday, I ended up making $644 dollars. My first pay check! Should I pay my car bill or splurge on a new pair of shoes? Hmmm…tempting…But I’m now officially 52nd on the money list and ready to move up the ranks!
So after a big practice week in Daytona Beach, I’m looking forward to playing LPGA International Golf Course and hopefully bringing it all together. The focus this week? LOTS of short game! Wish me luck world, and I hope you check it out on DuramedFuturesTour.com!
See you next time!
