We all know young female athletes are much more likely to sustain knee injuries than male athletes.
In this CNN report, a doctor details the mechanism of injury, something that needs to be known for prevention, but she also talks about sport specialization and the fact that it happens too soon especially for female athletes.
Not only is later specialization in sport better from an injury prevention point of view because it exposes athletes to a vast range of movement stimuli, but also it can reduce burnout. Also what many young athletes and parents aren’t aware of is that athletes who specialize early in a chosen sport are less likely to become pro athletes. This is because athletes who played more than one sport during their youth developed abilities that they wouldn’t have developed and practiced if they only played their chosen sport. No one sport encompasses all kinds of movements and skills.
