Not only is later specialization in sport better from an injury prevention point of view because it exposes athletes to a vast range of movement stimuli, but also it can reduce burnout. Also what many young athletes and parents aren’t aware of is that athletes who specialize early in a chosen sport are less likely to become pro athletes. This is because athletes who played more than one sport during their youth developed abilities that they wouldn’t have developed and practiced if they only played their chosen sport. No one sport encompasses all kinds of movements and skills.
