Dance Card: Chattanooga, SoCon champions

Who? The Lady Mocs of Chattanooga.

What? The mockingbird is the state bird of Tennessee. Scrappy is named for a football coach.

Where? Chattanooga, Tennessee, officially the Scenic City.

When? March 11th, in Asheville, North Carolina.

Why? They won the Southern Conference tournament.

How? The fourth time turned out to be the charm when Kayla Christopher converted an offensive rebound into the game-winning lay-up in Chattanooga’s 64-63 win. Taylor Hall led the Lady Mocs with 19 points, while Ashlen Dewart put up 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Surprise? Predicted to finish third in the conference, they ended up in first, three games ahead of Davidson.

RPI: 44

SOS: 267

Record: 29-3 (19-1 Southern)

Good wins: Tennessee.

Bad losses: At Elon.

Who’s driving this thing? Wes Moore, since 1998. He spent a couple of years at NC State as one of his stops.

Extra, Extra! The Times Free Press.

Junior forward Ashlen Dewart is the primary threat for this team, averaging 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Kayla Christopher adds 11.5 points from the guard position.

I like that they’re moderately careful with the basketball, but while the average height works out well, the overall lack of height likely will not.
