Dinara Safina withdraws from 2010 Brisbane International
Dinara Safina withdrew from the 2010 Brisbane International due to a back injury and is still uncertain if she will be able to play at the Australian Open.
Safina wanted to return from injury at the Brisbane Internation tennis tournament and start tuning up for the first major of 2010 but she won’t recover in time.
“At this stage she’s still entered in Sydney and the Australian Open. We were first up … unfortunately she’s not going to be recovered in time,” tournament director Steve Ayles said.
“I know she would have been working around the clock to try to be ready for the event, but in the end time beat her and she is still undergoing treatment,” he said.
The Sydney tournament will feature most of the women’s top 10 in the week before the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 18 in Melbourne.
Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters headline the Brisbane International women’s draw, along with Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Dokic.
