Doha 2009: Dinara Safina retires with injury against Jelena Jankovic at WTA Championships
Dinara Safina was forced to retire due to a low back injury against Jelena Jankovic in her first round-robin match at the WTA Sony Ericsson Tennis Championships.
Safina was serving at 1-1 in the first set when she stopped play, walked over to her chair and covered her face with a towel and told the chair umpire she could not continue.
“It’s really unfortunate. Dinara said she had hurt her lower back,” said Jankovic after the 13-minute match.
“I wished her well for her recovery. We all have problems with our bodies at this time of the year.”
Safina could lose her No. 1 ranking to Serena Williams if she pulls out of the tournament.
Earlier today Caroline Wozniacki defeated Victoria Azarenka 1-6 6-4 7-5.
