Connecticut Sun have a habit of picking up award winners for Young European Player of the Year. Alba Torrens was drafted into the WNBA in 2009. But international commitments with Spain at Eurobasket 2009 and the U20 European Championships kept her away from the WNBA.
Sandrine Gruda who was drafted in 2007 by the Suns picked up the award in 2006 and WNBA 2009 signing Anete Jekabsone-Zogota won the award in 2005.
Torrens is a 6-4 shooting-guard and is one of the best players from the 1989 generation in Europe. She was the winner of multiple awards at youth level and a member of the Spanish 2008 Olympic team.
She is currently playing her basketball for Spanish club side Perfumerias Avenida and will be in Euroleague Women action on Wednesday evening.
She edged out Swedish international Louice Halvarrson and Serbian international Jelena Milovanovic (also drafted in the WNBA) for the award.Powered by Sidelines
