Forward Kristen O’Neill apparently suffered a minor right knee injury while playing in Ireland that will prevent her from participating in the upcoming WNBA training camp. The announcement was made today.
O’Neill, an Edmonds native, was a solid practice player for Seattle during the 2008 season. She appeared in 11 regular-season games and would have had a difficult time making this season’s roster due to the 11-player limit, down from 13.
“My decision not to attend training camp this season was a very difficult choice to make,” said O’Neill in a released statement. “Throughout the rehabilitation process, it became clear to me that my knee will not be 100 percent by the start of camp. For that reason, I feel that it is best for me and for the Storm to give someone else this opportunity. I am at peace with this decision and would like to express my gratitude to everyone in the Storm organization and to all of Seattle’s wonderful fans. I wish the Storm a successful 2009 season and will be cheering them on in pursuit of another WNBA Championship.”
The Storm training camp roster stands at 14 players. Nine are under contract with the hope two-time MVP Lauren Jackson re-signs with the team. Camp opens May 17.
