Tuesday, August 6 – As announced by the WPSL front office last week, four players from the Kansas City Shock have been recognized for their performance this season with conference and All-WPSL honors.
Defender/captain Aliesha Cassie (left) and forward Racheal Quigley (right) were both named to the 1st Team All Midwest/Big Sky South as well as Cassie to the 2013 All-WPSL Team. Defender Ashlyn Castillo and defender/forward Alyssa D’Egidio were given 2013 2nd Team All Midwest/Big Sky South honors.
“I was surprised about it, but pleased,” said Quigley. “I got a text from my mum congratulating me and I saw a bunch of people tweeting about it.”
According to the WPSL website, 2013 was the most competitive year for the league following a 14-team increase, bringing the number of teams in the league at 70. Cassie, Quigley, Castillo and D’Egidio were chosen for the All-Midwest/Big Sky South 18-player teams out of a pool of close to 280 athletes. Cassie made the cut for the 18-player All-WPSL roster out of an estimated 1400 athletes across the entire league.
“I had no idea about [the All-WPSL team],” said Cassie. “I didn’t know anything until I woke up to a text from Quigs saying congratulations.”
Messages from fans and family have been pouring in for the players from all over the globe since the announcements, all offering their compliments for the awards. The Shock is very excited about the honors, and hopes this will establish a tradition of conference and WPSL awards for the team.
