How she would describe her US Open experience in just one word. . .
“Someone asked me this question at Wimbledon, how I would describe the whole experience. There’s not really one word. Everything about it is just unbelievable. But basically I love to play tennis, and that’s why I’m here. I’m loving it.”
On her relationship with long-time coach Brian de Villiers . . .
“Brian is like another dad to me. I’ve been with him since I was nine, so basically since I started playing tournaments. Our relationship has just so many things I’ve learned from him. We’ve been through a lot together.”
About the word “believe” etched on her tennis shoes. . .
“My boyfriend gave me that idea to put on it, and I really liked it. So I put that on my shoe. It seems to fit me well.”
Why she doesn’t plan to buy a new vehicle with her prize money . . .
“I love my Toyota Forerunner, so I’m not looking forward to getting another car at all. I just got it and I’m happy with it.”
On her role model, former world number one and seven-time major champion Justine Henin . . .
“The first thing is that she proved that you don’t have to be six foot something to be No. 1 in the world. But also, the way she plays, the way she moves, the way she uses all different shots and uses the entire court with her dropshot and her angles.
Her one handed backhand is so good. I don’t have a one hander, but it’s still okay. I don’t know. I just really like the way she plays. She figures out a way to take down these players that overpower her with her variety and her movement.”
