“Some of you know, most of you don’t, all of you I thought should know about a project I’ve been working on for about a year now called “Hello, Skater Girl.”
It’s a photography book – my first – about women skateboarders.
What? Has Julian gone bonkers? What about his weird electronic projects, writing, that remake of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Near Future Laboratory?
Rest assured, I still wield a mean, smokin’ hot soldering iron and we’re only 18 months behind schedule on the remake.
This photography project was one of those “follow your curiosity” projects. After a year of shooting skateboarders as a way to learn more about this little corner of California I currently call home – I wanted a new angle, something that hadn’t really been looked at too closely. And, I have to say – women’s skateboarding is getting big and sporty. Just last weekend there was the 2nd Annual Girls Combi Pool Classic contest – and the competition was hearty. Good, great fun. Skateboarding may be the last board sport not to get huge across the gender gap – it’s happening now, though.
It was last year at the 1st Combi Pool Classic that I thought there was something there to be documented. There’s a story lurking amongst their passion and enthusiasm and friendships. And thus, “Hello, Skater Girl” – a photography book about some women skateboarders.”
