She is set to face Jodi Cole at Ninja Fighting Challenge in Bristol, VA Saturday.
We talked to Simmons about her career and training.
Wombat Sports: How did you get started in MMA?
Maddy Simmons: My boyfriend is professional fighter, Nate Jolly. We met 2.5 years ago, and I’d go to class with him every day and just watch. Finally, I decided to try out a jiu jitsu class, and fell in love!
Wombat: What do you like about training in MMA?
Simmons: I love the workout, and the adrenaline rush! I was a cheerleader and ran track (including pole vaulting), and they can’t touch the love I have for jiu jitsu and MMA.
W.S.: What does your family and friends think about you taking up fighting?
M.S.: Most of my friends are from this sport. I moved here about 3 months before I met Nate. So, needless to say, they love it.
My family isn’t overly supportive. Only my little sister, Anna has come to see me fight. My mom always makes sure to keep my munchkins for me so I can focus on my fight.
W.S.: Who do you look up to in MMA?
M.S.: Sarah McMann is my favorite female fighter. Her wrestling is phenomenal, and I love watching her use her skills.
W.S.: What do you find comes naturally to you in fighting? What do you find hard?
M.S.: The flow (comes easy). I love to just close my eyes and roll. The freedom that I feel when I’m just transitioning, is so relaxing.
The hardest thing for me, is finding opponents that are on my level, that will keep their word to fight me.
W.S.: What are your hopes and goals for the sport?
M.S.: I want to be a great fighter. Whether I win a pro championship or not, I just want to be remembered.
W.S.: Anybody you’d like to thanks?
M.S.: I wanna thank Nate for standing by my side through the ups and downs of life and fighting. My mom, for being an awesome grandma, and taking care of my babies. And to Team Ox for welcoming me back with open arms.
