I’m writing you as a resident of San Francisco, I am very concerned about the budget cuts to the Parks and Recreation Department. I just received word last week from Melvina Hill, a well-known figure at Kezar Track, that she was to be out of work come May 1st. I’m terribly saddened to hear this news. I am even more concerned with the various programs that will suffer as a result of these budget cuts, programs that promote healthylifestyles and make San Francisco:
- The Healthiest City, MSNBC & Self
- The Best Running City, Runners World
- 9th Fittest City, Men’s Health
- Best Walking City, Prevention
Please do not allow our parks and recreation facilities to go by the wayside. Many city schools depend on the use of these facilities, such as Kezar, for their sports teams and track. Many groups with hundreds of runners use these facilities on a daily basis. Non-profits and community organizations, serving low income families depend on these facilities.
We cannot let the economy affect our health, or our pride in being such a health-conscious and fit city. Please listen to the people who have made their voices heard at Town Hall Meetings this month, please stop the damage, as once it is done, it will be even more costly to repair dilapidated and neglected facilities.
I was born in San Francisco and have spent the last few years living and working here, proud to be a resident. So much of my experience in this great city has been with various recreational groups, from Team in Training and running the Nike Women’s Half Marathon, to San Francisco Road Runners Club, Girls on the Run and Golden Gate Triathlon Club. All of these groups are part of the fabric of a vibrant and active city. Without the facilities for these activities to continue, young active people are more likely to move to the suburbs and leave San Francisco, taking their tax dollars with them.
I have always respected and admired your work as our Mayor, especially since my Mom knew your Mom well. In fact, Tessa was even at my parent’s wedding. While I’ve never had the opportunity to meet you in person, I trust that you have the judgment to make the right decision here.
