Skier Lindsey Vonn took time out from training for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi to attend the the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (CFDAs) in NYC Monday night. Vonn, a guest of fashion designer Cynthia Rowley, was looking glamorous in a custom-made gown from the designer when she received a call from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency in the middle of the ceremony. According to New York Post’s Page Six, drug testers were waiting outside Lincoln Center to ambush her.
Apparently Rowley helped usher in officials, “Lindsay met the IOC at the bathroom. Cynthia stood guard outside, and no one was allowed to enter the bathroom. They were in there for about five minutes,” a Post source is quoted as saying. Vonn was then asked to “pee in a cup” and allowed to return to the festivities.
Random drug tests by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency are a fact of life for Olympic athletes who are required to notify the USADA of their location at all times. Vonn’s spokesman, Lewis Kay, said in an e-mail to the AP on Wednesday that Vonn was fine with the drug test, adding, “she understands it is part of the job.”
Fashionista’s Nora Crotty quipped: “Nothing says high fashion like peeing in a cup whilst [Vogue editor] Anna Wintour schmoozes nearby, right?”
While everyone wants athletes to be clean, this particular drug test seems a bit excessive. Unless of course the drug testers were hoping to meet honorees Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang or Oscar de La Renta.
