Maria Sharapova and Aleksandra Wozniak survive scare in opening match in Tokyo
Maria Sharapova scored a 4-6 7-5 6-1 victory against Francesca Schiavone at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
The Russian did not enjoy a good start, she was made to bite dust in the first set as it was pocketed by the Italian without much trouble.
But Sharapova was able to found her game and rallied to win the next two sets with relative ease.
Aleksandra Wozniak needed 2 hours and 40 minutes to beat Kimiko Date-krumm 5-7 7-6 6-4.
Wozniak lost the first set but won the second and then held on to her breaks and serve pretty well to take the third set 6-4 and the match.
Wozniak broke back every time she was broken in the match.
The duo had met only once previously and the result was the same. Wozniak will meet Caroline Wozniacki in her next round.
