Maria Sharapova reaches Warsaw Open quarter-finals
Maria Sharapova reached the Warsaw Open quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Darya Kustova, a lucky loser ranked 209th.
Despite the doubts over her fitness, Sharapova showed signs of her glory days. The Russian broke the Belarusian in the second game of the first set, and her only slip of the match came when she double faulted when leading 4-0 to give Kustova a break. But she quickly recovered and claimed the first set with a forehand winner that clipped the baseline..
With her right shoulder still strapped up, Sharapova used crisp baseline shots and strong serving to keep Kustova pinned to the baseline.
The former world number 1 raced through the second set and won 13 straight points to take her to 5-0, 40-0 before Kustova delayed the inevitable with a forehand winner.
The Russian then closed out the match when Kustova hit long and Sharapova’s unbeaten return was assured for at least another match.
In the quarterfinals of the warsaw Open Maria Sharapova will have a much challenging match when she faces Alona Bondarenko, who defeated Marta Domachowska 6-3, 6-1.
