The revolving door of college sports uniforms continues to turn, as the unveiling of new team gear has become a weekly event. The newest fashion update in college basketball involves a tribute to the late Jimmy Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Valvano coached NC State for 10 seasons and led the team to a memorable NCAA championship win in 1983. During tonight’s Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden, the team will take on UCONN styled in specially designed uniforms.
The new jerseys are not a huge departure from NC State’s usual gameday threads, but aesthetic touches were added to pay homage to Valvano. The backs of the red jerseys are void of players’ names. Instead they feature the phrase, “Don’t ever give up.” Those inspirational words of encouragement come from Valvano’s famous 1993 ESPYs speech, given just a few months before he summumbed to cancer. A basketball net graphic appears on the collar and shoulders of the gear, a design detail that pays tribute to Valvano wearing the nets following his championship win. The tradition of “cutting down the nets” began with NC State in 1947. Also featured on the upper left of the jerseys is The V Foundation logo. The V Foundation is a charitable organization founded by Jimmy and ESPN and dedicated to saving lives by helping to find a cure for cancer.
