Declarations for the NCAA preliminary rounds were published yesterday. They are the start lists for the NCAA Championships, and are available here. The prelim meets will be held next Thursday through Saturday at Oregon and Indiana.
After perusing the lists, I noticed a few interesting things.
First, Oregon’s Jordan Hasay is doubling in the 1500 and 5000. Given her tripling at the NCAA Indoor Championships and doubling at the Pac-10 Championships along with the Ducks’ title aspirations, this is hardly surprising.
What is surprising is the absence of two notable distance runners. Oklahoma State’s German Fernandez, the 2009 NCAA 1500 meter champion, will not be running at the NCAA regionals despite having run fast enough to qualify. His outdoor season has been pretty much a bust, after redshirting the indoor season and last year’s outdoor season.
More surprising is the absence of Colorado’s Jessica Pixler. The many-time D-II champion had a year of eligibility left after graduating from Seattle Pacific and went to grad school at Colorado. She ran a great 15:25.58 at the Stanford Invitational in March, then raced an 800 and 4
