McKinzie Olson Would Hope You Wouldn’t Remember This Moment
UConn vs Yale (7:00)
A week can make such a difference in terms of the outlook of a team’s season. One week ago at this time, UConn were contemplating just what had happened to their season after a protracted winless streak. And then they felled Penn State and Illinois in extra time, providing an instant jolt to their confidence. Despite the double triumph, the Huskies are still getting no respect from the coaches voting in polls, the voters seemingly unwilling to forgive the early season defeat to minnows Siena. Yale opened their renovated stadium with a bang, beating much fancied Penn State before fighting Illinois tooth and nail before falling by a slim margin. Already having shown a taste for upsets, they’ll look to shoot down UConn and their newfound momentum in Storrs.
Louisville vs Kentucky (7:00, FOX Soccer Channel)
AKA Kelsey’s Revenge. Kentucky forward Kelsey Hunyadi makes her dramatic return to the school she spent two seasons with before crossing the divide and transferring to the blue half of the state of Kentucky. Hunyadi has been integral to the rapid improvement of the Wildcats in 2010 after Kentucky suffered through a miserable and toothless 2009 campaign. Louisville is also enjoying a revival after being so disappointing in 2009 and will be looking to cement their status as contenders with a win over their heated rivals. High stakes and heightened passion should be on display in Louisville on Thursday night, with the added bonus of a TV audience in the form of Fox Soccer Channel broadcasting festivities.
BYU vs LSU (9:00, BYU-TV)
BYU has been gleefully smashing anybody in their path thus far in 2010 and gets another chance to take down a big conference team when LSU rolls into town on Thursday night. There’s no doubt that the Cougars remember the humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Tigers in the reverse fixture in Baton Rouge a few years ago when Mo Isom sent a long free kick bouncing over the head of goalkeeper McKinzie Olson and into the back of the net. The play made SportsCenter and made Isom an instant YouTube hit. Don’t think that BYU has forgotten, and don’t think the Cougars won’t hesitate in trying to bury the struggling Tigers under an avalanche of goals.
