Can Jennie Marshall and BYU Prove They’re Not Just The Product of Provo?
Texas vs BYU (8:00 EST)
You’d forgive BYU for feeling a little nervous coming into Austin after all the upset carnage of the weekend past. Teams like Arizona State and Virginia lost their undefeated status, be it by blowout or a single goal, while others like UCLA crumbled at the hands of lesser opposition. The Cougars remain on the dwindling list of unbeaten sides but face a real test on Monday night against a much improved Texas Longhorns team. BYU has developed a reputation as a fearsome home team that sometimes travels on the road with disastrous results (see LSU in Baton Rouge in 2008). The visitors do have plenty of something Texas doesn’t have though: depth. It’s going to take a massive effort for Chris Petrucelli’s team to lock down players such as Jennie Marshall, Carlee Payne, and emerging super sub Lynda Hercules for ninety minutes. Texas’ first unit can run with all but the top tier of teams in the country, but proven options on the bench are a commodity the Big XII side doesn’t enjoy. If BYU can come into Austin and leave with its undefeated mark still intact, we may be able to call these Cougars more than a bunch of home bullies.
