Call it poor planning, call it superstitious, call it what you will. I just turned in my old tri shoes, the great Shimano TR50, circa late ’07 and finally upgraded for a shiny pair of the updated WT51. Yes, just did this, as in post training for over 6 months for my big tri of 2009, post Ironman race. Yes, I know.
Why now? Well, my pretty blue shoes (the TR50’s), were worn. Let me rephrase that, the insert was worn, the upper was worn. Carbon sole of course, well that’s still carbon. I was actually a bit worried to try a new shoe just prior to my race and stuck with what I knew worked, which was just fine in the end. But on to my new shoes.
The new Shimano Women’s Carbon Tri option is shiny. Not only does the synthetic upper have a patina to it, they feel shiny too. The insole is a decent improvement, previously it was a pretty generic thin insole. The latest iteration is a lot more durable and actually formed more towards the dainty shape of ladies feet. I rode these a couple times on my bike and was happy with the fit and feel. The ventilation is good, while not over exposing the toes, as the TR50 was apt to leave you with numb toes quite often. The fit felt snugger, well yes they are new shoes in comparison to old stretched out shoes. But the velcro strap and opening is much better than the prior model which had the strap as part of the entire upper. This enables a better velcro placement and a snugger fit, preventing the foot from moving around in the shoe too much.
Beyond the “shiny” factor of fit and feel, they are a sassy color with lime green accent. Whew, a long overdue departure from…dare I say it…PINK. (Still love pink, I’m just sayin’). I like the way they fit, feel and look, which is always important!
