Chicago Red Stars
Jessy Battelli – D – Denver – Not the typical dominator from day one that usually touches down in Denver but still rounded into a hell of a center-back for the Pioneers, concluding her college career with Summit League Defensive Player of the Year honors. Red Stars need all defensive help they can get, so she’s got a good shot at sticking.
Micaela Castain – F – Washington State – Bizarrely enough went undrafted despite being the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year after a fantastic senior season for the Cougars. Usage numbers are middling but she’s continually improved throughout her career, and Dames usually gets best out of players, so she’s got a real chance to stick as depth.
Heather Cooke – D – Landsbro (SWE) (Loyola (MD)) – Well, let me put it this way. She couldn’t make Washington’s roster last season despite the Spirit having a wretched backline for much of the season. Filipino international has found a decent situation though and has an outside chance of sticking at depth challenged Chicago.
Florence Dadson – F – Robert Morris University – Trying to make history as first African player to make a NWSL roster. Ghanian youth international is a three-time NAIA All-American and scored a ridiculous thirty goals from twenty-one games this past season. Step up in class is huge, but upside might be worth the roster spot.
Samantha Johnson – D – USC – Another in the legion of underachievers from USC that have seen the program atrophy in the past half decade. Has youth international experience for the U.S. but never amounted to much more than an above average player in college. Likely convert to full-back after being an attacker with Trojans.
Clara Kridler – GK – Purdue – An odd one. Never really excelled at Purdue, but good God, did you see some of the defenses she was forced to play behind? For what its worth, GAA and save percentage measures were wretched as a senior, so she doesn’t stand much of a chance of beating out Vancil for backup role.
Kelley McCloskey – MF – San Diego – Fireplug was a key contributor on a usually formidable San Diego side for four years, going from walk-on to team captain. Listed as a midfielder but played everywhere with the Toreros though she’s most likely a left winger here. Crowded field but has a decent shot.
Kecia Morway – D – Colorado College – Left-back has a national title ring from her freshman season with Notre Dame before transferring to the Tigers for her final two seasons. Didn’t turn into a superstar but has experience with Dames from club days with Eclipse club and Red Stars from WPSL stint. Has a good shot with team needing full-backs.
Niki Read – MF – Illinois – Last college season was in 2012 with battling Illini side. Has lots of experience from her time with Big Ten side but never put up any real big numbers, never really standing out. Long odds to break into side with plenty of midfield punch on paper.
Annie Worden – F – Fordham – Last played in college with Rams in 2012. Toiled on some really bad teams but didn’t do much to stand out either. Listed as a forward on this roster but never scored more than six in a season collegiately, which is likely indicative of the uphill climb she faces for a roster spot.
