Two of the three U.S. women’s boxing team members have conquered their first hurdles on their way to the London Olympic Games.
Queen Underwood and Claressa Shields won their first bouts in the preliminary round at the AIBA Women’s World Championships in China Saturday. Underwood defeated Dayana Sanchez of Argentina 24-13 in the 60 KG weight class, while Shields defeated Pooja Rani of India 27-10 in the 75 KG weight class.
Both make the field of 32; and with two more win, they will qualify for the Olympics.
Shields will face England’s Savannah Marshall, and Underwood will face New Zealand’s Alexis Pritchard. Both bouts will be on Monday.
Action continues Sunday as USA Olympic team member Marlen Esparza has her first bout of the AIBA World Championships.
We will have live results as they happen on our boxing section starting early Sunday morning.
