Hidden at the bottom of a press release announcing the Arizona Wildcats schedule for the 2010-2011 season was a gem of information late on a Saturday night. The Pac-10 is making a major change to the format for the women’s tournament this year, and the championship game will be played at the Staples Center, the same site as the men’s tournament. According to the release, the early rounds of the women’s tournament will be played at the Galen Center for the third straight season.
There are no further details about the game-time or whether the men will be playing on the same day. We’ll be working on those this week.
This is a another big change from the desk of commissioner Larry Scott, who has been shaking up the Pac-10 since he took over last July.
Scott said last spring, as he sat at the poorly attended women’s finale at the Galen Center between UCLA and Stanford that he would be reviewing the women’s tournament and would consider making changes.
The tournament has struggled with attendance since its inception.
It has been held in Eugene (2002), San Jose (2003-2008) and Los Angeles (2009, 2010).Powered by Sidelines
