Pole Vault Olympic Champ and World Indoor and Outdoor Record Holder Yelena Isinbaeva broke her own world record todat, vaulting over a height of 5.00 meters in Donetsk, Ukraine, at the Bubka Memorial Sunday.
The 26-year-old Russian bettered her previous record of 4.95 meters, which she set at the same meet in 2008. Before clearing 5.00 meters, Isinbayeva cleared 4.97 meters after missing twice at 4.96m.
“It was just superstition,” she said. “We decided for 4.97 instead of wasting another attempt on an unlucky number.” She then requested the bar be moved to five meters and nailed it on her second attempt.
“We had in mind to first do 4.96 and then five metres,” she said. “The reason is the atmosphere here. It’s a very special competition and there are lots of special connections for me here.”
Isinbaeva has two more competitions left on her schedule for the 2009 indoor season: Birmingham next weekend, and the Prague International on February 26.
