WACO, Texas – No. 5 Texas A&M (21-2, 9-1) fresh off of a three-game winning streak looks to get revenge on No. 1 Baylor Monday night in Waco. The Aggies have not lost since the Lady Bears rolled into College Station and handed A&M a loss on their own floor on January 30. Baylor (23-1, 10-0) is on a 20-game winning streak and undefeated in Big 12 play for its best-ever start in the program’s 37 seasons. The Lady Bears opened the 2007-08 season at 20-1.
Baylor and A&M were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the preseason Big 12 Conference coaches’ poll, their exact positions going into tonight’s game. It is only the fourth game in league history between two top five teams. Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey is 20-4 overall vs. the Aggies and 9-2 in Waco.
The Ferrell Center should be near to capacity if not sold out. It will be a Pink Zone game to raise awareness about breast cancer. Baylor sold out Saturday’s game against Texas and routed the Longhorns 96-68.
Texas head coach Gail Goestenkors had nothing but accolades for Baylor after her team’s loss.
“This is the best game I have seen them play,” she said. “I have seen them play a lot of games, and we played them pretty well at home, but they were clicking on all cylinders. Just a really impressive performance on both ends of the floor for them, and really for everybody. It was a complete team effort on their part.”
A&M is sponsoring a bus caravan of fans from College Station to Waco.
Senior Danielle Adams leads A&M in scoring and rebounding with 23.7 points per game and 8.5 rebound per game. She is followed by junior forward Tyra White at 13.4 points an outing. Adora Elonu, a junior forward, ranks second on the team in rebounding with 6.0 a contest.
Baylor is led by sophomore center Brittney Griner’s 22.4 points and 8.0 rebounds a contest. Freshman guard Odyssey Sims follows with 13.4 points a game. Senior Melissa Jones adds 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds a contest. Sophomore transfer and post Destiny Williams puts in 9.1 points and 6.6 rebounds an outing.
In the all-time series between the two teams, Baylor holds a 45-35 advantage. The Lady Bears have won the last six straight meetings. The last game A&M won was by 19 points at home on March 1, 2008.
