Even with Angel McCoughtry in foul trouble for much of the game and out of play for several minutes due to an injury, the Atlanta Dream gave the Seattle Storm a run for their money in game one of the WNBA Finals. However, Seattle sealed the victory with a jumper from point guard Sue Bird with 2.6 seconds left on the game clock. Bird finished the game with 14 points and eight assists.
Lauren Jackson led Seattle with 26 points. Camille Little added 18.
For Atlanta, McCoughtry and Iziane Castro Marques had 19 points each while Sancho Lyttle and Erika Desouza each added 10.
Both team jerseys had the logo of a new league sponsor, Grupo BBVA, a spanish multinational bank. BBVA also sponsors Spain’s premier football league, Liga BBVA (also known as La Liga). The league will make a formal announcement about the sponsorship on Monday.
Game 2 is Tuesday, September 14 in Seattle at 9 p.m. ET. It will be televised on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN3.com.
