On day 2 of the WTA Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Serena Williams defeated his sister, Venus Williams, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 in their second round robin match.
With this victory and the withdrawal of Dinara Safina, Serena re-claimed the number 1 in the women’s tennis rankings.
This loss leaves Venus, who is the defending champion, on the brink of exiting the 4.55 million dollar tournament.
“Dinara must be hurt because she never gives up – it would have been a really great tournament had she been able to get through to the final,” Serena said.
“It’s a great feeling (getting back to number 1) but I feel really sorry for Dinara. She’s a great player and never gives up,” Williams added.
“It’s a shame for the tournament that she couldn’t get through to the final.”
The encounter between the Williams sisters was very very close and even Venus had a match point in the 12th game of the third set which featured six breaks of serve. But Serena eventually clinched the match with her 12th ace, leaving Venus to rue her 10 double faults.
“It really could have gone either way. At the end of the third set she just started playing great,” Serena said. “I was just trying to do what I could. I kept saying, ‘I want to end this year No.1, so I’d better lift up the level of my game.'”
“Today was a close match. I definitely would have liked to win,” Venus said. “It was almost three hours. I came close to winning. I feel like I played one loose point in the tie-break. I remained aggressive. It was kind of by one point…”
The Maroon Group has Serena Williams on top with two wins, Elena Dementieva has one win while Kuznetsova and Venus Williams are winless.
