After a serious injury, formerly ranked featherweight and Strikeforce fighter Shana Nelson has announced her retirement from fighting Thursday.
Nelson (5-2 pro) had sustained a spinal injury during training this past April, which saw her lose feeling in her lower extremities. After several nights in the ICU, she went home to hopefully recover.
Nelson made the announcement on her facebook page about her decision to retire.
While the last few months have been extremely difficult and frustrating for me, the decision I have made today is even harder. After several follow ups and consultations I have decided it is in mine and my family’s best interest to retire from professional fighting. I hope to be back training with the crew and GetSum and sharing my knowledge and what I have gained with everyone. MMA is and always will be a part of my life and I am fortunate to get to continue on teaching others. I can’t thank all of the people who have been involved in my career enough for all of the love and support they have shown me. I Love You All!!
We wish Nelson continued recovery and hope she will stay a fixture outside the cage and in the sport.
