Storm PF Lauren Jackson (pictured right) will not travel with the team to Sacramento today due to a mild strain of the left Achilles. She had an MRI this morning and will remain in Seattle to receive treatment. Storm coach Brian Agler said C Janell Burse will likely replace the All-Star in the lineup on Friday.
Jackson, a 6-foot-5 post, suffered her injury late in the third quarter in a three-point loss to Detroit on Wednesday. There was physical play on defense that left Jackson hobbling to the locker room. She left KeyArena on crutches without speaking to media.
Agler said the injury is day-to-day, so Jackson, the Storm’s leading scorer (18.9), could be back in the lineup for a home matchup against Minnesota on Sunday.
Meanwhile rookie Ashley Walker (right toe) will travel. She’s still not close to returning to play. And Agler admitted to C Suzy Batkovic-Brown struggling.
The Australian hasn’t played in the WNBA since 2005 and missed training camp due to her wedding. Batkovic-Brown said learning the plays has been the hardest part and frustration showed between her and PG Sue Bird on Wednesday.
“Suzy played hard — had some mistakes — but competed,” Agler said. “It wasn’t like she was out there standing around, she was trying to make things happen. I felt bad for her because I know she was giving us effort and I told her that. It is what it is.”
The Storm (8-6) has lost its past two games overall and past two on the road. Sacramento (3-11) will play its second game under John Whisenant, who fired Jenny Boucek on Sunday for a lack of winning.
