Apparently training camp is getting more intense as rookies battle for the expected last spot on the roster. Storm center Janell Burse, who already missed the 2007 season to rest her left shoulder, had to leave the session today after a collision to have the same shoulder examined.
Burse (pictured right by the WNBA) had an MRI and the results were negative, but she remains questionable for Saturday’s opener in Sacramento. Burse was upbeat when she returned to the practice facility after being examined, yet couldn’t give any definitive word on her status for the season-opener.
She has long refused to have the shoulder surgically repaired, playing in Russia against tough competition to test whether rest was enough to strengthen the joint and prepare it for a WNBA season.
“She went up for a layup and got hit, I didn’t see it too close,” Storm coach Brian Agler said of the incident.
Burse is expected to start the season, Agler noting that the position is hers to lose. Center Suzy Batkovic-Brown isn’t expected until Sunday and center Ashley Robinson only started one game last season.
Agler said he’s uncertain of his starting lineup, regardless, and wouldn’t divulge any possibilities his staff is considering.
As for other injuries, F Swin Cash participated in a light portion of the practice after experiencing swelling in her left knee on Monday. The swelling was from an allergic reaction to medication, she said.
Rookie Ashley Walker also was back on the floor after being bothered by a nagging calf injury.Powered by Sidelines
