Don’t get too attached to the reuniting of the “Great Barrier Reef” inside for the Storm this season. After marrying Mat Brown on May 30, Storm C Suzy Batkovic-Brown disclosed to Australian reporters that she wants to have a baby before the 2012 Games.
While she’s not certain when that’ll happen, and isn’t trying during this WNBA season, it could put a crimp on the future. Of course Batkovic-Brown, like Los Angeles star Candace Parker, is completely entitled, but with the WNBA paying less than overseas, Batkovic-Brown, who’s contracted to play again in Europe, would probably try to miss the WNBA season if she can. That gives Seattle a second season of championship-or-bust with another solid lineup that could be separated after one run. Last year it was aging MVPs Sheryl Swoopes and Yolanda Griffith, who are no longer in the lineup.
“I’m going to try to make it through to the next Olympics, but I also want to have a kid,” Batkovic-Brown, 29, told The Daily Telegraph. “I think if I had a kid I’d be fine, as long as I had a personal trainer to keep me in shape and tell me what I can and can’t do if I had a baby before the Olympics.
“As for having someone to babysit while I’m playing, that’s why you get married, to have a husband to look after the kids. I warned him before we married.”
Batkovic-Brown was injury plagued during the Beijing Games. Coupled with ankle injuries from fellow Aussies Lauren Jackson and Penny Taylor and the Opals had a miserable showing they’d like to redeem.
On a side note, isn’t Batkovic-Brown’s statement about “that’s why you get married” refreshing? I’m sure this was said with a laugh of some sort, but remember when that was why men got hitched? Anyway, just thought that was a hoot I’d highlight in case you glossed over it.Powered by Sidelines
