Throughout the next few days, we will be previewing the upcoming Storm Damage MMA one night featherweight tournament. The event is set for Saturday in Camberra, Australia. The event won’t be streamed, but a DVD will be available three weeks after on Stormmma.com.au.
Maryanne Mullahy is a BJJ practitioner that started whe she was a teenager. She has made huge strides to crossover to MMA by recently taking a trip to Tiger Muay Thai in Thailand to improve her striking game.
She made her MMA debut at last year’s BRACE Girls all female event, getting the second armbar submission over Rebecca Steward.
Wombat Sports: Tell us a little about yourself. How did you get started? Who do you train with?
Maryanne Mullahy: I’m 25 and from Melbourne Australia, and I’m currently at university studying a science degree. I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when I was 16, and went on from there. I currently train under Gustavo Falciroli at Absolute MMA and also at William Street Gym.
Wombat: What does it mean for you to be a part of this historic tournament?
Mullahy: It means a lot to me! It’s an amazing opportunity to compete against some tough female Australian and New Zealand fighters and gain more experience fighting MMA – I’m very thankful to Storm Damage for giving me the opportunity.
W.S.: We have seen an increase in more female fighters over the past two years in Australia. What do you account for the growth?
M.M.: I’d say that would have to be the general increasing popularity of the UFC and other such organisations making MMA more well known … and for Australian organisations like Storm Damage and Brace for putting on awesome female fights.
W.S.: This is a one night tournament. How are you prepping for possibly three fights in one night?
M.M.: Sparring and conditioning, and lots of it! Very intense evening having all the fights in one night… be sure that the two ladies left fighting in the final definitely deserve to be there!
W.S.: Anything you want to add?
M.M.: (Go to) www.stormmma.com.au/sdtickets.htm for tickets! Come down and show your support for Australian MMA! Will be a great night out!
