Former training camp invitee La’Tangela Atkinson (pictured right) has been signed for the final two games by Storm coach Brian Agler, who’s also the team’s director of player personnel. Since the Storm has less than nine players available to play this week, the team was elgible for the WNBA’s hardship rule, adding a player to fill voids while remaining under the $803,000 salary cap.
F Lauren Jackson (back), G-F Katie Gearlds (knee), and F Swin Cash (funeral) will miss Seattle’s home finale against Phoenix on Thursday and road trip against San Antonio on Saturday. Cash is expected to return for the postseason while Jackson and Gearlds are day-to-day with their injuries.
Storm PG Sue Bird is on the practice court now, returning from a sore neck suffered when she woke on Saturday morning in Minnesota. She missed the game, but said if healthy, she’d like to play-out the final two games to remain in rhythm.
Agler would like to rest his players heading into the postseason, however. Atkinson, despite not playing for any WNBA team this summer, could see big minutes on the perimeter as Agler tries to rest G Tanisha Wright and F Camille Little.
Atkinson, who starred at North Carolina and idolized Storm PG Shannon Johnson while growing up, last played for Sacramento and Indiana. A 6-foot-1 swing player, she also played overseas.
