Svetlana Kuznetsova says Clijsters can challenge at U.S. Open
Svetlana Kuznetsova, who was upset by Kim Clijsters 6-4 4-6 6-2 in the third round of the Cincinnati Open, said Clijsters would be a title contender at the U.S. Open after she experienced how well the Belgian was playing.
Kuznetsova was not quite at her best but Clijsters’s performance convinced her there could be more to come.
“I think she has good chances,” Kuznetsova said. “She plays good and … when a person is prepared, everybody can have good chances. She won the U.S. Open once so I think she knows how to do it.”
Kuznetsova said it was almost as if Clijsters had never been away.
“She is the same as she was before,” she said. “She moves well. You can see she hasn’t been all the time on the tour but she was playing great. I don’t know if you remember when she was out with the wrist injury (in 2004), she won Indian Wells and Miami back-to-back.”
