. Former Houston Comets assistant coach Alisa Scott, the partner of Sheryl Swoopes, was hired as women’s basketball coach at Shoreline Community College. Scott held her first open gym on Tuesday and brought Swoopes along.
The former Storm star is still trying to sign with a WNBA team, but with final rosters due Friday, it looks like the three-time MVP may have to wait until after the season begins to get more looks.
Scott (pictured far right by Jeffery Hobbs) faces immediate challenges at Shoreline CC. She’s the third coach in two years and turnover for players is just as high because the school only offers about 65 percent scholarship, according to athletic director Doug Palmer. Palmer said the head coaching position is part-time, paying about $6,000, and every sport has to raise its own funds.
Practice begins October 20 and play starts in November with Shoreline CC hosting a tournament.
Interest is high because of Scott’s experience and her relation to Swoopes. Players who previously quit or transferred are trying to return.
“She’s got the background and more experience than most coaches do at this level,” Palmer said of Scott, who played and worked under Van Chancellor and was once an assistant at Old Dominion. “But it does feel like we’re back where we were two years ago in building a program. I don’t like that we have to go backward before we begin going forward.”
