The Olympic trials is about a month away which means athletes are have very little time to collect their standards (list here). This past weekend there were plenty of fast times and athletes putting everything on the line for those standards.
2012 Shanghai Diamond League Results (videos here)- Jamaica’s Veronica Campbell-Brown showed that she Is coming into form in the 200 meters, winning in 22.50 over the U.S.’s Carmelita Jeter (22.62) and Nigeria’s Blessing Okagbare (22.71). Jamaica’s Novlene Williams-Mills garnered yet another win in the 400 meters running a 50.00 followed by Amantle Montsho ( 50.83) and Kaliese Spencer (51.81). In wet conditions, Chaunte Lowe took the win in the high jump with a mark of 1.92. China’s Xingjuan Zheng was second with 1.92 followed by Marina Aitova 1.88. In the throw, Sandra Perkovic threw 68. 24, way past the U.S’s Stephanie Brown Trafton who threw a 64.20 and Australia’s Dani Samuels who threw 62. 34.
2012 USATF Oxy High Performance Meet (videos here) – Oxy High Performance was the place to be for distance runners to garner quick times with only the 800 meters, 1500 meters, Steeplechase and 5,000 meters being contested. In the steeplechase, Bridget Franek took the win with a 9:41.96 followed by Ashley Higginson (9:46.83) and Beverly Ramos in 9:47.47. The three 800 meter heats were pretty even with Geena Gail winning the first in 2:00.44 followed by Alice Schmidt (2:00.79) and Kate Grace ( 2:01.63). The second heat was won by Molly Beckwith in 2:01.24 followed by Lemlem Ognasilassie in 2:01.53 and Jessica Smith in 2:01.79. Collegian Katie Palmer won the third heat in 2:02.77.
The 1500 meters, the first two heats were very competitive. In the first heat, Gabriele Anderson was the surprise winner in season opener running a 4:06.46 over Morgan Uceny (4:06.52) and Katie Mackey (4:06.67). Also in her season opener, Shannon Rowbury held off a charging Anna Pierce winning in 4:05.92. Brenda Martinez was third in 4:06.11.
The 5000 meters featured two up-comers against a veteran. Deena Kastor kept an even paced 400 meter laps followed closely by Lisa Uhl and Jackie Areson. In the final closing laps, Uhl and Areson separated with Areson taking the win in 15:14.31 followed by Uhl in 15:15.22. Kastor finished third in 15:23.51.
Great City Games– Racing through the streets of through the streets of Manchester, the sprinters had a chance to show off their speed. Lashauntea Moore won the 100 meters in 11.41 followed by Verena Sailer in 11.54 and Candyce Mcgrone in 11.57. Jessica Ennis won the 100 meter hurdles in 12.75. Dawn Harper was second in 12.86 and Danielle Carruthers was third in 13.02. Sanya Richards-Ross took the win in the 200 meters in 22.71 followed by Denisa Rosolova in 22.53 and Margaret Adeoye in 23.56. Moore also won the 150 meters in 17.05 over Montell Douglas in 17.73 and Sonia Tavares in 17.82.
2012 Tucson Elite Classic– The throws were on display at the Tucson Elite Classic. Jillian Camarena-Williams won the shot put in a throw on 19.82 meters followed by Michelle Carter in 19.18 meters and Sarah Walker in 18.79 meters. Brittany Henry won the hammer throw in 69.97 meters. Brittany Riley was second in 68.96 meters and Gwendolyn was third in 68.47 meters. In the discus, Yanbo Yang won with a throw in 60.53 meters followed by Gia Lewis-Smallwood in 59.88 meters and Liz Podominick in 59.06 meters. Kara Patterson won the javelin throw in 60.36 meters. Rachel Yurkovich was second in 59.86 meters and Alicia DeShasier in 57.97 meters.
In the long jump, Brittany Reese won the with a jump of 6.85 meters over Jamesha Youngblood (6.54 meters) and Brittni Dixon-Smith (6.49 meters). Arizona’s Brigetta Barrett won the high jump with a jump of 1.89 meters followed by Hyleas Fountain in 1.85 meters and Becky Christensen in 1.80 meters.
