You have to believe that today is more special than others for Pat Williams as his Orlando Magic begin their quest for their first NBA Championship. In 2008, he wrote tremendous book, “The Ultimate Coaches’ Clinic.” It is a fascinating book because of the style Pat utilized. He surveyed over 1000 coaches and administrators for insights to what is important to successfully do their job. From time to time I will share a few but it is a great book to own and I highly recommend it. Nell Fortner has successfully coached at all levels including guiding our Olympic team to a 2000 Gold Medal and leading Auburn to the SEC Championship this past season. Here are her thoughts on coaching from Pat’s book:
1. Demonstrate great enthusiasm every day, because athletes feed off that.
2. Stay positive and instruct without degrading your players. That will motivate them to play their hardest.
3. Be consistent with your discipline and don’t let little things slide. Stick to your guns and players will respect you for that. If the bus leaves at 4 pm, it leaves right then. If practice starts at 3 pm, lock the doors, and if a player is late, they miss practice.
4. Coach with all your heart. You can’t coach half-way. Give it your best. You’ve got to give everything you’ve got.
