USA Track & Field announces addition to VISA Championship Series

Saturday, February 11, in Fayetteville. More from USATF.

It will be called the USATF Classic, and TV coverage will be a next-day tape-delayed package on ESPN2 from noon to 2:00. It’s part of Arkansas’ college meet that same weekend, and is essentially a resuscitation of the Tyson Invitational, which had been part of the VISA tour up until a couple of years ago.

This is a relatively late announcement, so the negotiation must have been going on for a while. More lead time would be better. But it’s still great to see another pro meet added to the schedule.

With such short notice, it’s hard to imagine decent fields could be put together. Here’s what they’ve already got:
Galen Rupp (2 mile)
Kirani James (400m)
Jillian Camarena-Williams, Michelle Carter (shot put)
Brittney Reese, Hyleas Fountain, Marshevet Hooker, Funmi Jimoh (long jump)
Shawn Crawford, Richard Thompson, Churandy Martina (60m)
Silas Kiplagat, Leo Manzano (mile)

It’s a start. More to come for sure.
