This has to be the best Women’s College World Series I have ever seen. Well, this is also the first WCWS I’ve seen in its entirety. After the crazy 4 hour game between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Washington Huskies which ended in a walk-off walk, the next game got even better. Florida staves off having to play another game (thank goodness since it wouldn’t have started until passed midnight eastern time) with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. Washington easily took game one of the championship game 8-0 against the Florida Gators. The Gators allowed four runs on a strange play (see video) in the top of the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning Morgan Stuart hit a two-run double and in the sixth Ashley Charters drove home two more with a two-out home run to give the Huskies the 8-0 lead. Then everyone thought the game ended including the umpires.
Anyone else think John Kruk is dispensable? He’s a great guy and his strange comments make me laugh occasionally, but it’s obvious he doesn’t know much about the game of softball. Kruk keeps referring back to baseball and goes on long-winded rants about the most inane things. In the fifth inning Kruk starts a tirade about baserunners looking at the third base coach. Beth Mowins and Jessica Mendoza didn’t know how to respond so there is this long pause before Mendoza completely changes the subject. ESPN should have kept Michele Smith in the booth. If John Kruk really wants to work the WCWS then give him a mic and have him roam the stadium with Holly Rowe until he picks up a thing or two about the sport.
Game 2 is on Tuesday at 8pm on ESPN2.
