Billie Jean King versus Bobby Riggs it is not. In fact, Chicago might get a better workout against a traditional male practice squad. But tonight’s debut of the WNBA’s LiveAcess featuring Chicago against an all-male celebrity squad will be entertaining regardless. The men play in the Entertainment League out of Los Angeles. Game time is at 5 p.m. PST.
Comedian Bill Bellamy (shown right) is already crackin’ jokes, saying he and G Kristi Toliver are “Barbies” because they wore the same sweat suit and that he’ll stop C Sylvia Fowles from dunking on him by putting chocolates and wedding books on the floor. “Can’t no woman concentrate when they see that,” he said.
In an effort to prevent this blog from turning into Theknot.com, I’ll just suggest you tune in because the men are funny and can play from what I remember. Now if they are as funny as the Storm’s Jimmy Quigg, the league might look into selling tickets for this type of event nationwide.
I did ask a couple of Storm players what they thought about the gimmick game and they were for it. “It sounds cool,” said F Camille Little at media day.
“Shyra [Ely] is all excited about it, so I’m really happy for her,” said Swin Cash of her former Storm teammate. “When it comes to the play, when there’s fans, you’re going to get the guys playing a little bit harder than they would at NBA All-Star. Now, it comes down to pride. I don’t care what any man says, at the end of the day they never want to get beat by a woman.”
