Have you seen the Oregon women play? It’s like Phoenix Mercury-esque – but at a lower level. The Oregon Ducks scored 80 – and still lost – to the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. It didn’t matter because it was probably some of the best college basketball I have seen all season. Stanford was able to beat the Ducks at their own game – Oregon coach Paul Westhead’s run-and-gun style.
If you aren’t familiar, Westhead is a former NBA coach who took over the Phoenix Mercury in 2006 coaching the team to a championship in 2007. Phoenix went from one of the worst teams in the WNBA to national champions in two years. In 2008, Westhead left Phoenix to coach the Oregon women’s basketball team, and he is definitely making an impact in the north west.
Even though it was a loss to the league, it’s good to know Westhead is creating some amazing basketball in the Pac-10. There is nothing more exciting than a high-powered offense, movement without the basketball, and a swarming defense. Oregon sits in 7th place in the Pac-10 with a record of 3-4 and an overall record of 12-7, but mark my words, in a couple of years Oregon will be one of the best teams in the Pac-10. Westhead’s brand of basketball will definetily recruit higher caliber players. Who doesn’t want to shoot the basketball all the time? The Oregon Ducks have to improve their inside game offensively and defensively and soon this will be one of the best teams in the Pac-10, if not the nation.
