The players union’s long-time leader will be replaced. In the meantime, NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts will be the WNBPA’s interim executive director.
The WNBA Players Association announced in a letter to players earlier this week that Pamela Wheeler has been replaced by Michele Roberts, the new Executive Director of the NBA Players Association on an interim basis. According to the WNBPA’s website, Wheeler served as director since April 1999.
According to Scott Soshnick of Bloomberg News, a WNBPA memo announced that a search is underway for Wheeler’s permanent replacement. Former WNBA player Ruth Riley will lead an advisory committee to make recommendations on employment condition, marketing, and other issues. The union has also brought on the Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe law firm as advisers.
Roberts has already made her voice known that she will bring the heat on the NBA early on during her tenure, most notably saying a comment that the league’s salary cap is “un-American.” Since she is also handling the WNBA’s matters for the time being, perhaps we may be seeing more of the same with women’s players as well.
