U.S. women canoeists turned in strong performances in Charlotte this past weekend at the combined Olympic Trials/World Cup Selection races at the U.S. National Whitewater Center.
Final results Women’s C1 (singles canoe – single blade):
Gold – Colleen Hickey
Silver – Micki Reeves
Bronze – Hailey Thompson
Women’s canoe is still a non-Olympic event but these young women put on performances showing they are worthy of competing in London, if only they were given the opportunity. Instead of the Olympics, these women will go on to the World Cup events in Europe (Hickey and Reeves with the U23 National Team), and Hailey Thompson will focus on Junior Worlds in July. She will be going for Gold this time after earning a Bronze medal at the 2010 Junior Worlds. Hickey and Reeves have improved exponentially over the last year. Their work on and off the water shows.
We would like to give a special thank you to Joel McCune, who took time out of his busy schedule to give the women canoeists expert coaching and unwavering support.
