Brookins was a stand out high school athlete. She participated in gymnastics, baskeball, and track. During her high school years, she was dignosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The diagnoses was a relief as it allowed her to address the lack of focus that distracted her from her school work.

She went on to compete at the University of South Carolina. Brookins earned her first All-American award in 2008, as a freshman. The following year, she improved her previous year's finished by taking home the NCAA title in the 60m. This race set a new school record and tied the NCAA meet record. She was also part of the 4X100m relay that placed third. In 2011, she captured another All-American award indoors. She also won the outdoor NCAA 60m title for the second time.

Brookins is a professional sprinter and is currently sponsored by Saucony.
